Tour B: Cotinga Excursion
2 Day Cotinga Excursión in the Santo Domingo Valley, leaving from Posada Casa Vieja!! Highly recomended
1. Day: We leave early in the morning from Posada Casa Vieja, along the Transandean Highway to the Páramo, highlands of the venezuelan Andes in between 3000 - 4300 meters. We bird down the outside wall of the Andes.
Highlights: Andean Condor, Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagle, Ochre-browed Thistletail, Bearded Helmetcrest, Sword-Billed Hummingbird, Torrent Duck, White Capped Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet, etc.
In the afternoon we go down the Santo Domingo Valley to the cloudforest next to San Isidro.
Highlights: LEK of the Cock of the Rock. Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Crested Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Sword-Billed Hummingbird, and various sunangels, Golden Winged Manakin and Green + Black and Golden Breasted Fruiteater.
We will stay in the charming colonial village of Altamira at Posada Caceres.
2. Day: In the morning we will bird in the Altamira area, looking for the Wire-tailed Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Golden-headed Manakin, White crowned Manakin, as well as many tanagers, hummingbirds and others.
After lunch we vistit Laguna Mucubaji in Sierra Nevada national park where we look for Andean and Blue Winged Teal, Brown Backed Chat-Tyrant, Bar winged Cinclode, Great Thrush and with luck Andean Snipe.
Late in the afternoon we arrive to our Posada Casa Vieja.
