About us

Joe Klaiber was born in Germany where he became a joiner. With this qualification he left to the Canadian outdoors. After he moved to South America he started to work as a tour guide for German operators and tourists all over in Venezuela.

Since 1995 Joe also works with photographers, botanists and ornithologists from different countries as well as with bird lovers as The German Institute for the Bird Research and the WWF.

In 2000 Joe and Alejandra’s first daughter was born and they opened the Posada Casa Vieja in Merida. Soon they started their travel agency Caiman Tours. The team consists a young professional office stuff with expert guides and the company has his own fleet of brand new vehicles and buses. 2006 they bought a colonial house in the Andean village Altamira de Caceres and opened a comfortable Lodge there.

From our guesthouse Posada Casa Vieja there are diffrent possibilitys to do hikes on your own. One of the best is the Humboldt trail, which is superb for cloud forest birding. Besides that we offer lots of diffrent excursions in the country, daily organized by our travel agency, like Los Roques islands and excursions to the Angel Fall in the Canaima national park and others.
