Bird Andes / Los Llanos – Tour 8 days

Best birding tour 8 day tour in Venezuela.

Day 1: Arrival to Mérida airport where your bird guide will welcome you. Drive to the famous La Azulita area. We stay at El Tao Lodge. There are plenty of birds in the garden. The La Azulita area is excellent for toucans, macaws and parrots, tanagers + hummers.

Highlights:Crested Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Plush capped Finch, Military Macaw, Bronze Winged Parrot, Rose headed Parakeet, Black Mandibled Toucan, Collared Aracari, Emerald Toucanet and different Hummingbirds, Flycatchers and Tanagers.
Day 2: Today we will observe the bird life around La Azulita in the cloud forest La Carbonera + coffee plantations. In the area around La Azulita there are a lot of colorful birds to see. In the late afternoon drive to Tabay.
We will stay in the colonial Posada Casa Vieja.

Day 3:Full day Humboldt trail, Sierra Nevada National Park. At the national park entrance we will search along a creek for White capped Dippers and Torrent Ducks. The river and forest scenery is wonderful. As well there is a good possibility to observe Golden headed Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Andean and Band tailed Guan, Collared and Inca Jay, Emerald Toucanet. At an altitude of 2000m in subtropical cloud forest, between, tree ferns, bamboo plants, bromeliads and orchids, we make a hike through the cloud forest.

Following species can be seen: endemic hummingbirds like Merida Sunangel + Golden tailed Starfrontlet, Merida Tapaculo, 5 species of Antpittas (hard work!), Gray capped Hemispingus, Moustached-, Slaty- and Chestnut capped Brush-Finch, tanagers, trogons, quetzals and andean woodcreeper + woodpecker. Bird watching in the cloud forest is not easy but with patience and the help of playbacks we will see sub-tropical species.

Day 4:We drive to the Páramo, which is between 3000 and 4300 meters/ 14000 feet, and start to bird down the outside wall of the Andes to the subtropical cloud forest and tropical mountain rain forest.
Highlights: Andean Condor, Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagle, Torrent Duck, Ochre-browed Thistletail (endemic), Bearded Helmetcrest (endemic), Paramo Wren (endemic) and the Sword-Billed Hummingbird.
We pass the Santo Domingo Valley to La Soledad, San Isidro, Los Frailes and Altamira.
Highlights: Cock of the Rock, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Crested Quetzal, Masked Trogon, Sword-Billed Hummingbird, and various endemic sunangels and endemic fruiteaters.

Day 5: After breakfast we will bird in the Altamira area, looking for the Wire-tailed Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Golden-headed Manakin, White crowned Manakin, as well as many tanagers and hummingbirds. Here are plenty of trails where to observe. Around 11 am there are soaring birds of pray. With luck we might see a Black and chestnut Eagle, Crested Eagle or Black Hawk Eagle.

Day 6:  Los Llanos Safari: In the morning we will drive to our ranch in los Llanos. Here it is possible to see up to 150 bird species in one day. Los Llanos is the best area in Venezuela to see wildlife like Orinoco crocodile, spectacled caiman, giant anteater, anacondas, different turtels, capybaras, monkeys, Jaguar, etc.

Highlights:Orinocan Saltator, Ruby Topaz and Copper-rumped Hummingbird, Orange-crowned Oriole, Russet-throated Puffbird, Pale-headed Jacamar, Yellow-knobbed Curassow, Scarlet Macaw, White-fringed Antwren, Barred- and Black-Crested Antshrike, as well as all kinds of storks, ibis, herons, hawks, kites, falcons, caracaras, vultures, etc.
We stay at Hato el Cedral.


Day 7:Fullday birding at Hato Cedral. In the morning we do a boat excursion on the Caño Cuaritíco or Matiyure. Besides the shorebirds we will look for dolphins and monkeys. In the afternoon we will concentrate on birds or animals that we haven’t seen yet or you want to see again.
Overnight Hato el Cedral

Highlights: the Hoatzin and, with luck, the Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Jabiru stork, roseate spoonbill, diffrent owls as well as parrots and macaws.

Day 8: We will drive to Barinas airport and in the afternoon you will get your flight to Caracas, or to your next destination like Canaima, Los Roques, etc.
